Partnering to Resolve Local Flooding
by Metro Strategies
Metro Strategies was honored to have three opportunities to share our knowledge and experiences with public outreach and education for the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District’s (MWRD’s) Harwood Heights Stormwater Management Master Plan (SMMP) Pilot Project. Our work with the Village of Harwood Heights and MWRD began in 2015 along with Cardno and M3 Engineering – one of five teams selected to investigate urban flooding issues and evaluate potential green infrastructure solutions.
Most recently, Project Manager Elli Cosky presented this work at both the national and regional American Planning Association conferences. She also worked with the project team to present at the Illinois Association for Floodplain and Stormwater Management (IAFSM). At the national APA conference in Phoenix, the presentation was so popular that it was standing room only. Attendees were impressed with MWRD’s initiative to advocate for green infrastructure, the substantial outreach/engagement that was completed and the educational discussion around the community’s issues. At the IAFSM conference, members voted our team’s “Partnering to Solve Local Flooding: MWRD’s Stormwater Masterplans Open Panel Discussion” third in the 2016 “Best Presentation” Awards.
With Elli’s recent departure from Metro Strategies to welcome her second child, we will carry on the critical stormwater work with our talented experts in this field, Susan Franklin and Seema Wadia. If you’re interested in seeing Metro Strategies’ APA presentation, click here.
