Susan Franklin brings 25 years of infrastructure project messaging experience to Metro Strategies with a specialization in stormwater permit compliance. Working with high-profile clients like the Michigan Department of Transportation and Michigan's state capital, the City of Lansing, Susan has written and produced communications such as stormwater best management practices field guides, inflow removal brochures, water customer surveys, illicit discharge and pollution prevention articles, interpretive signage and award-winning project newsletters. She wrote the operations manual for the Michigan Avenue Engineered Rain Gardens demonstration project, which was selected to be 1 of 12 featured in EPA's "Smart Growth Streets" handbook. She has also been preparing annual (drinking) water quality reports per the federal Consumer Confidence Report rule of the Safe Drinking Water Act since the program's inception in 1998.

Since moving to Chicago, Susan has completed a number of critical public education pieces for the Burlington Road and IL-47 intersection improvement, which helped establish IDOT District 1's roundabout IDS standards, sheet setup and information requirements. Susan has been an active member of the Chicago Wilderness Corporate Council, the American Water Works Association and the Illinois and Michigan chapters of the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC). Her diplomacy while serving as ACEC-M Engineering Excellence Awards chair during a merger with another awards program earned the Outstanding Leadership Honor award.

Clients have come to trust Susan's story-writing abilities, which turn difficult technical subjects into engaging content suitable for public consumption. Her in-depth project portrayals have earned 19 state awards and 4 national awards on behalf of her clients and employers. She also brings attention to her clients' successes by co-authoring articles, such as "Expediting Infrastructure Projects through Public Agency Partnering," which was published in Public Works Management and Policy.

Susan holds a B.A. in Communication from the University of Michigan and recently downsized her life to welcome more travel time to local and exotic destinations.
